On your screen, with keyboard and mouse

Started with --novr (see Windows or Linux), NodeWorld uses the keys of VRChat on desktop. The game reads where the keys are, not their letters: on an AZERTY keyboard, move with Z Q S D.

The menu and windows on your screen

With keyboard and mouse, the menu opens in the middle of your screen, over the dimmed world. The mouse pointer shows: click with the left button, scroll lists with the wheel. While the menu is open, neither the world nor its panels get your clicks. Close it with Esc.

The rest of the game shows on your screen too:

  • invites, invite requests and the other windows that come while the menu is closed, in the top right corner: press Tab to show the pointer, then click their buttons;
  • the Link your headset card and the loading screen, in the middle;
  • the mic icon, in the bottom left corner.

Keys help

The first time you arrive in a world with keyboard and mouse, the Keyboard and mouse window shows all these keys, with the letters of your keyboard. Close it with OK or Esc. It does not come back on this device: the same list is in Settings, Controls tab.

Mic icon

A small microphone icon shows while you speak, that is while your microphone sends your voice. While your microphone is muted, it is crossed out and stays on screen as long as it is muted.

  • In VR, it is in the bottom left of your view and follows your head.
  • With keyboard and mouse, it is in the bottom left corner of your screen.

Typing in a text field

A text field is the search box of a page, the message box, your status, the name of a new instance, or a field of a world, such as the address of a television.

With keyboard and mouse

Click the field: a cursor blinks in it and a blue ring surrounds it. From then on, the keys only type. They do not move you, make you run, jump, crouch or lie down, mute your microphone, show the pointer or close the menu, and the world you are in does not receive them.

Key or clickWhile you type
EnterSends the message, or confirms the field. In the message box, you can type the next message straight away.
EscLeaves the field and keeps what you typed. Press Esc again to close the menu.
Left click outside the fieldLeaves the field: the cursor and the ring go, and the keys move you again.
Left click on a button, such as the send buttonClicks it.

A key you still hold when you leave the field does nothing until you let go of it: if you were holding the key to walk forward, release it and press it again. The click that leaves the field does not pick up or use what is in front of you.

The VR keyboard

In VR, point at a text field and press the trigger: the NodeWorld keyboard opens in front of you, a little below your eyes. It opens for every text field, in the menu and in the worlds. Type with the ray of either controller and the trigger, or with your finger.

  • There is no gap between the keys: a press between two keys types the nearer one, and a press on the edge of the keyboard types the key at that edge.
  • AZERTY or QWERTY, at the top left, switches the layout (also in Settings, Display). In AZERTY, the row above the letters has the French accents.
  • Hold a letter to see its accented forms, then slide onto one or press it.
  • The up arrow at the bottom left writes one capital letter; press it twice to lock capitals. ?123 and =\< show the numbers and symbols, the smiley shows the emoji.
  • The arrows at the top move the cursor; the arrow pointing down hides the keyboard. The blue key sends or confirms; in a field of several lines, it starts a new line.
  • Grab the bar under the keyboard to move it. It comes back in front of you when you turn well away or walk off.

Press the trigger anywhere else, in the world or on the menu, to leave the field: the keyboard hides.
