Game updates
NodeWorld looks for a new version each time it starts, and only then. When there is one, its update screen opens before you sign in or arrive in a world, with the version number and what changed, in the game's language.
Required or offered
- Update required: the new version talks to the servers in a new way, and yours can no longer join them. The screen says This version of NodeWorld can no longer join the servers. and has two buttons, Quit and Update.
- Update available: the new version works with the same servers. Update installs it now; Later goes on to the game, and the screen comes back at the next start.
In VR the screen stands in front of you, like the loading screen; with keyboard and mouse it is in the middle of your screen, over the dimmed world.
If the game cannot reach NodeWorld when it starts (no internet, NodeWorld down), it starts as usual.
Download
Update downloads the new version and shows how much is done (Downloading: 126 MB of 266 MB). If the connection drops, the screen says Connection lost. Trying again in 8 s. and the download goes on from where it stopped. It also goes on from there if you choose Later or close the game in the meantime: the next Update finishes it.
Before installing anything, the game checks that the file is the one NodeWorld published: its signature and its fingerprint. A file that does not match is never installed, and the screen says The download failed NodeWorld’s security check, so it wasn’t installed.
Install on a PC
On Windows and Linux the game installs the new version by itself, closes and starts again, without VR if you started it without VR; the screen says Installing. NodeWorld closes and opens again by itself. On Windows the NodeWorld installer does it in the background, with no window to click (Install on Windows); on Linux the new AppImage takes the place of the old one (Install on Linux).
If the game was started by an Open in NodeWorld button and the update came first, the new version still takes you to that instance after you sign in.
Install on Quest
On Quest the game downloads the new version, then opens the headset's installer:
- The first time, the screen explains that NodeWorld needs your permission to install apps. Choose Open settings: the headset opens NodeWorld's page for this permission. Allow it, then come back to the game.
- The installer window opens: confirm the installation. NodeWorld closes while it installs.
- Open NodeWorld again from your app library (filter Unknown sources, as in Install on Meta Quest).
If you close the installer window by mistake, Install on the update screen opens it again.
If it does not work
The screen says why and offers Retry:
- Not enough space on this device for the update.: free some space (the game needs about 2 GB on Quest), then Retry.
- This update can’t be downloaded yet. Try again later.: its files are not online yet; Retry a little later, or choose Later if the update is offered.
- Couldn’t reach the download server.: check your connection, then Retry.
- The update couldn’t be installed.: on Linux, the AppImage is in a folder you cannot write to (see Install on Linux); otherwise, install the new version by hand from the link you were sent.
What changed from one version to the next is also in the client changelog.
