Install on Windows

You need Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. You play with a PC VR headset (SteamVR, Meta Quest Link or Air Link) or on your screen with keyboard and mouse.

Install

  1. Download NodeWorld-Setup-<version>.exe from the link you were sent.
  2. Double-click it. The installer does not ask for administrator rights.
  3. Leave Shortcut without VR ticked if you play without a headset (see below), then click Next.
  4. Choose the install folder: by default %LocalAppData%\Programs\NodeWorld, in your own Windows account. A folder your account cannot write in (such as Program Files) is refused: choose another one.
  5. On the last page, leave Run NodeWorld ticked and click Finish to start the game.

The installer also adds NodeWorld to the Start menu and lets the website's Open in NodeWorld buttons start the game (the nodeworld:// links, see Instances).

"Windows protected your PC"

The installer is not signed yet, so the first time Windows may show a blue Windows protected your PC window. Click More info, then Run anyway.

Start the game in VR

  1. Start SteamVR, or Meta Quest Link / Air Link, and put the headset on until you see its home.
  2. Open the Start menu and choose NodeWorld. NodeWorld uses the VR runtime that is active.
  3. Allow microphone access if Windows asks, so others can hear you.

Start the game on your screen, without VR

Without a headset, start NodeWorld (no VR), on your desktop or in the Start menu. The installer makes it when Shortcut without VR is ticked; it starts the game with the launch option --novr.

If you unticked it, run the installer again and tick it: your game, settings and sign-in stay.

The keys are on the Controls page.

Next: first launch and sign-in.

Updates

When a new version is out, the game offers it when it starts and installs it itself, then starts again: see Game updates. You do not download the installer again.

Uninstall

Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find NodeWorld, then choose More > Uninstall. You can also right-click NodeWorld in the Start menu, then Uninstall.

This removes the game, its Start menu entry and the nodeworld:// links. Your settings and your sign-in stay in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\NW\NodeWorld (delete that folder to remove them too), and your photos stay in your Pictures folder.

If something goes wrong

  • The game shows an error or a black screen without a headset: without a headset the game must be started with --novr (see above).
  • The game does not start in my headset: start SteamVR or Quest Link first and wait for the headset home, then start NodeWorld.
  • Windows blocks the installer: click More info, then Run anyway. NodeWorld is new and not signed yet.
  • Open in NodeWorld does nothing on the website: install NodeWorld first (see Install), then try again; your browser may ask whether to open NodeWorld, accept.
  • Nobody hears me: in Windows' privacy settings (Microphone), turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone, then turn the microphone back on in the game.
